Successful “Boxing Mania 2” At YDC

A very successful PRE-OECS Boxing Tournament dubbed “BOXING MANIA 2 2017” was held at the Youth Development Center in Grand Anse  last Saturday 1st April,2017.

While delivering the feature address and officially declaring the tournament open, President of the Boxing Association  of Grenada Johnson St.Louis, congratulated his  hard working executive team for doing a marvelous job during  challenging times over the past  year.

In recent years  the sport of Boxing has been on the rise once again in Grenada he said:

In 2015-  Grenada captured the OECS Boxing Title and won 3 Bronze  medals at CDBT in Guyana.

2015- Coach Jewel Lewis achieved Level 1 Star AIBA Coaching Certificate.

2016-  Grenadian Boxers captured 3 Gold and 2  Silver medals and won the title of Champion Boxer at CDBT in Barbados.

In 2016 and 2017 two local boxing cards were held in Gouyave with a lot of potential in the making for boxing in the outer parishes.

St.Louis noted that there are encouraging signs and interest  shown for boxing in schools  like GBSS,TAMCC and Hindsey. We have to regularize and capitalize on these developments.

By 2018 The Association should really be on the way to host the first Inter -Secondary School Boxing Tournament and by 2020,it is the intention for Grenada  to send sending a powerful Boxing Team to the Summer Olympics in Tokoyo,Japan.

We are working with the Ministry of Youth,Sports and Religious Affairs for a permanent home  for boxing at  the soon to  be named Kirani James  Athletic Stadium and the appointment of  Boxing Coaches in the Ministry.

St.Louis said this ‘Box-Off’ will serve to give much needed practice to our  Boxing Ringside Officials;to  select Boxers on the National Team to defend our OECS Boxing Title in St.Lucia at the end of this month; to select our representatives on the National Team for the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas in May of this year; and to prepare for two major ‘Boxingmanias’in Grenada  and Carriacou respectfully  in May and July featuring Boxers from the region, as far as St.Lucia and the Bahamas.
