Hillsborough, Carriacou-The first underwater sculpture park in the Grenadines was officially launched in Carriacou.
During a Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) consultation in July 2023, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, Hon. Tevin Andrews, suggested the idea of the 13-square-mile island having its own sculpture park. Today, the park, dubbed “A World Adrift”, is a reality.
Minister Andrews, speaking at the official launch of the park, said we must continually find ways to boost the local economy, and described the park as an added attraction.
He asked the business community here whether they are involved in the hospitality sector or not to work on improving their level of customer service.
Kirl Hoschtialek, Chief Operations Officer of the GTA, noted that in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which left a trail of devastation, the underwater sculpture park is a reminder of the power of renewal, hope, recovery and resilience, not just for our land but for our seas as well.
“This park is not just an addition to Carriacou’s cultural landscape; it is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and climate resilience”, Hoschtialek added.
The park, which features local students from primary and secondary schools here, is critical in positioning our islands as leaders in sustainable tourism, by integrating art with marine conservation.
Visionary sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor was the designer of Carriacou’s first underwater sculpture park.
