IICA Supports Poultry Farmers In Grenada And Carriacou

Fourteen poultry farmers, including six from Carriacou, have been identified for assistance by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen the agricultural sector following Hurricane Beryl’s devastation.

At a ceremony held on December 19, 2024, at the Ministerial Complex Car Park, seven farmers—four from Grenada and three from Carriacou—were given 700 broiler chicks and 196 bags of chicken feed as part of this initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Acting Permanent Secretary Mr. David Hopkin expressed profound gratitude to IICA for its steadfast support of the poultry farmers and the agricultural sector. “IICA has been a strong collaborator and partner over the years,” said Mr. Hopkin, “and I look forward to building on the strong partnership that has been formed with IICA over many years.”

Representing IICA’s Eastern Caribbean States Delegation, Mr. Gregory Delsol, Technical Specialist in Grenada, highlighted the broader objective of the initiative. “This small intervention is part of IICA’s wider support towards the rehabilitation of the agricultural sectors in countries affected by the passage of Hurricane Beryl and reflects IICA’s commitment to its technical cooperation agenda,” stated Mr. Delsol. He added, “We are happy to provide support to these poultry farmers whose operations were disrupted by the hurricane. IICA remains dedicated to promoting growth and development in the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of its stakeholders.” The recipients expressed heartfelt gratitude to IICA for the valuable inputs and committed to ensuring the best care for the animals. In addition to the inputs provided, the Ministry of Agriculture is rolling out training sessions on good poultry management.

This initiative aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of the farmers, ensuring the success and sustainability of their operations. The support of poultry farmers does not end here. The remaining seven farmers will receive 700-layer chicks and 476 bags of feed in the coming weeks. This collaboration between IICA and the Ministry of Agriculture underscores the shared commitment to rebuilding the agricultural sector, fostering resilience, and supporting the livelihoods of farmers in Grenada.
