The Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association (GHTA) is proud to announce a landmark donation of EC$486,000 through its Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) to the Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority (GSWMA) for the acquisition of a state-of-the-art, commercial-grade glass pulveriser system.
This donation, the largest financial contribution ever made to GSWMA, signifies a significant commitment to enhancing waste management and promoting sustainability in Grenada.
The donation aims to address the pressing need for effective glass recycling solutions on the island, facilitating the reduction of glass waste and supporting the overall goal of a cleaner, greener Grenada. The new glass crusher will not only streamline the recycling process but also contribute to the development of sustainable practices within the tourism industry and beyond.
Arlene Friday, CEO of GHTA, expressed her enthusiasm about the donation, stating, “This substantial investment in the glass crusher represents our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism. We believe that by providing GSWMA with the tools necessary to improve waste management, we are taking an essential step towards preserving the natural beauty of Grenada for future generations. The donation was announced during a ceremony held at GSWMA Queens Park on 11 March, attended by key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, as well as secondary students. The event featured remarks from various dignitaries, including Senator Salim Rahaman, Private Sector Parliamentary Representative, and Elvis Lewis, President of GHTA, who both underscored the importance of partnerships in advancing sustainable waste management practices and leaving a lasting impact for future generations. It also featured representatives from the Ministry of Climate Resilience, Samara Burris, Communications Specialist and the Ministry of Tourism, and Naline Joseph, Tourism Advisor.
Lyndon Charles, Integrated Resource Manager at GSWMA, shared insights on the anticipated impact of the glass pulveriser system, emphasising its potential to revolutionise glass recycling in Grenada. “This donation will empower us to significantly enhance our recycling capabilities, reduce landfill waste, and contribute to a more sustainable environment,” he stated.
The ceremony culminated in the unveiling of the project design and a formal cheque presentation, solidifying the commitment to a greener future for Grenada. It was followed by a vote of thanks from GSWMA Communications Officer Myrna Julien, who thanked GHTA for their impactful donation.
