CRIC 17 KICKS OFF IN GUYANA

Georgetown Guyana-REAL FM, Negotiations this week in Guyana are expected to paint a clearer image on land degradation and drought for countries that begun the process towards achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). These issues surrounding the Land are being tabled at Seventeenth Session of the Committee for the Review of Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) , which convened here in Guyana, Monday 28th January.

For the first time, Guyana is hosting this meeting, which explores the implications of Land Degradation, and Drought linking them to poverty and poverty eradication, meaningful action, Gender equality and Climate change ahead of the Conference of Parties 14  ( COP14).

UNCCD-Monique Barbut addressing the opening ceremony Monday said,”Over the next three days a clearer picture is expected to be painted, to know how much land is actually degraded.”

One hundred and Sixty Nine of the One hundred and Ninety six Countries were affected by Land, with the Time of global land outlook- at least 20% of land areas showed degradation

About 126 Member states are being represented at the meeting which runs up until January 30th at the Arthur Chung conference center in Guyana.

Host country Guyana aspires to be success story and remains proud of achievements to date Minister of State Republic of Guyana Joseph Harmon told participants. He reiterated that Guyana remains deeply conscious that land represents link between people and environment. With this in mind his government has emphasized the Establishing green economy, with green state development strategy 2040.

Dr.Pradeep Monga, another of the delegates said he was happy with happy with Guyana taking a lead role ahead of   COP 14- from the 7th-18 October 2019.

The days as he furthered will be used to Test waters, for the dialogues and negotiations   at COP 14 in India. He described it as the start of the Political process for COP 14 begins here- many issues will become more fortified in COP14

The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, who is leading the operations, welcomed delegates from more than 150 member states including Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Grenada, Gambia, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Haiti, Tanzania, Indonesia, Eritrea and Ghana.

Over the coming days, many issues will be discussed related to land management participating countries will be able to share experiences others and learn from the experiences of others.
