Government Supports Kayak Athletes Off To Jamaica

Hillsborough, Carriacou- Three athletes from Carriacou are joining four (4) others in Jamaica after receiving scholarships to study on the Caribbean island.

Jaden Teka, De Andre Bristol and Johnella Jones, students of Bishop’s College and Hillsborough Secondary, are the recipients of athletics and academic scholarships and they were guests at a recent special send-off ceremony.

Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, Hon. Kindra Maturine-Stewart, offered them congratulatory messages and words of advice at the ceremony.

Minister Maturine-Stewart, outlining government’s contribution towards the athletes, including a $700 monthly stipend and a brand new laptop computer for each, said the ruling administration will continue to invest in potential future Olympians and others who are interested in making sports a career. She admonished their parents to continue to play an active role in the lives of their children, as they balance academics and sports.

Making reference to the rise of former Olympian, Jamaican Usain Bolt, Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Rholda Quamina, said although Carriacou is yet to have proper sports infrastructure, our athletes are being sort after by Jamaican schools. This is commendable, she said.

Teka will be attending Kingston College; Bristol is enrolled at St. George’s College; and Jones will be at St. Jago High. All three were given support for their studies by their local secondary schools in Carriacou.

The four that preceded them as student-athletes in Jamaica are Zaid McFarlane, Avonella Andrews, Jamora Alves and Asharerah Enoe.

Meanwhile, local coaches Angel Johnson, Kelisha Sammerson and Antonia McIntosh recently completed a Level 1 athletics coaching programme.

They participated in the training exercise as part of an effort by the Division of Sports to improve its athletic programme for Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
