Christmas Message By Commissioner Of Police, Edvin Martin

Fellow Grenadians, as we celebrate the holiday season, let us be inspired by the sense  of hope associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. This renewed optimism should serve  as a beacon of hope as we seek to emerge from the difficulties and challenges we  faced this past year. The COVID-19 pandemic not only disrupted our lives and  livelihoods, but sadly also took the lives of many of our loved ones. Notwithstanding,  let us reflect and give thanks for the grace and mercy of God during this past year.

COVID-19 and its associated challenges showcased the resilience of our people and  gave eloquent testimony of our capacity to overcome adversity when we come  together for a common purpose. This notion was reinforced by the fearless, unfazed  and resolute commitment displayed by our frontline workers.

As we embrace the holidays, be mindful that we are still in a fight against a persistent,  versatile and deadly virus that preys on the unvaccinated, complacency and non compliance with the protocols. Let us use this time of grace to reinforce our  commitment to getting vaccinated and being compliant with the protocols of the new  normal.

Notwithstanding the disruptive impact of the pandemic, from a law enforcement  perspective, we achieved many successes. We have seen a relatively stable crime  environment, characterised by a 70% contraction in homicides, a 2% reduction in  reported crimes and a crime solving rate of 79%.

We were able to effectively protect our borders from criminal elements and in the  process seized 16 illegal firearms, and a quantity of illegal narcotics carrying an  estimated street value of over $9.5 million. The RGPF also intercepted and deported  37 Illegal immigrants, many of whom were involved in criminal activities.

Driven by the passion to ensure the safety and security of our nation and the  preservation of our way of life, our men and women in uniform demonstrated true grit  in the face of high levels of infections. Sadly, we also lost two officers.

Despite the challenges, our officers were unwavering in their dedication to duty. They  demonstrated perseverance, resilience, courage, and tenacity in the execution of their  regular and additional duties to ensure the safety and security of our people and  nation.

I therefore take this opportunity to express gratitude to the rank and file of the Royal  Grenada Police Force, including our rural constables, traffic wardens, and civilian  support staff for their efforts throughout a very difficult year. I wish them and their  families a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, healthy, and prosperous 2022.

To you our constituents, we are truly appreciative of your support, and humbled by the  outpouring of assistance from stakeholders and individuals at home and in the  diaspora. My vocabulary lacks fertility to adequately express the depth of my gratitude  for your assistance during these difficult and trying times. I assure you that  notwithstanding our limitations, the Royal Grenada Police Force remains committed  to providing you with the highest level of law enforcement service possible.

You, our stakeholders, and members of the public, are critical to our success and  represent a distinct competitive advantage as we carry out our mission.

Special thanks and appreciation to the Government, and specifically to the Prime  Minister and Minister for National Security, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, for  his leadership and dependability, particularly during this past year.

As we transition into the festivity of the season, I appeal to all to be vigilant in your  personal safety and protecting personal property. Make a special effort to look out for  our young and naïve and sharpen your awareness of potential criminals who may seek  to prey on any vulnerability or complacency.

Let us try to be our brother’s keeper, to care for and encourage each other, and to  bring a sense of cheer and relief to someone this season.

I therefore wish everyone, a Merry and safe Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Let  us look forward to 2022 with optimism.

Be safe and thank you!!
