According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Finlay Jeffrey, over EC$2.5 million have been put into the local school book program. He explained on a local television program that this is because there are new books and new editions now available.
Jeffrey said that the books are here and that distribution began on Monday for primary schools, while the secondary school rollout will begin on Wednesday. He was responding to concerns that there was an apparent unavailability of books on the island.
He acknowledged that there were delays, but that these were due mainly to a problem with the supplier. The former teacher said that while he had observed the long lines at one of the bookstores in St. George, these were getting shorter.
