GASA Announces National Swim Team For 2018 OECS Championship

The Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has announced it’s 34-member team to compete at the OECS Pool Swimming Championship scheduled for November 8-11, 2018 in Landfords, St. John’s, Antigua. This year’s team will also include 3 swimmers who will participate in the Open Water Swim competition on Sunday November 11th.

Following the completion of the Grenfin Invitational Meet at the end of September, which also served as the OECS Time Trials, GASA’s Technical Team reviewed the results and the swimmers’ performances to determine the team selection. The 2018 team includes 6 first time OECS swimmers in the 7-8 age group. All remaining swimmers in the other groups are returning as more experienced swimmers, some of whom have now moved up to a higher age category.

Grenada is the defending OECS Champion. And while the team continues to strive toward victory; in keeping with GASA’s mandate, that victory may take multiple forms. Swimmer progression is of ultimate importance in order to achieve the long-term goals of the organization. “Our training thrust is continuously evolving, not only focusing on the title, but on development,” states GASA President Peron Johnson. “Our goal is to assist our swimmers to have long-term careers in the sport; hence we are continually sharpening our training focus while adopting best practices.”

This year’s technical team will once again include a stroke specialist from the United States who worked with the team last year. This additional training proved worthwhile as it improved our swimmer’s focus on their overall technique. GASA is extremely thankful to the Grenada Olympic Committee who has supported this aspect of GASA’s training development plan once again this year.

Additional members of the technical team will include the National Coach, Gerson Escobar, and Senior Swim Coach within the Ministry of Sports, Nataly Regis-Sihera. This three person technical team will develop and implement the training plan that commences on Saturday and will intensify over the next 4 weeks.
