Grenada Highly Rated Proporation Of Female Parliamentarians

Grenada is highly rated among countries worldwide for the proportion of women in parliament. Seven of Grenada’s fifteen parliamentary representatives, the equivalent of about 47%, are women.

Four women also serve among the current group of senators.

At the Post-Election Seminar facilitated by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which wrapped up here today, Director of Operations, Mr. Jarvis Matiya said “Grenada is ranked 5th out of 190 legislatures around the world by the Inter-Parliamentary Union for women’s representation in elected seats.”

He further noted that, “of parliaments across the Commonwealth, Grenada is second only to Rwanda for gender balance.”

The commendable statistic resonates well with Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell who acknowledged that “the power of women is recognised globally but here in Grenada, that power takes on extra significance.”

Dr. Mitchell said, “As leader of the New National Party and as Prime Minister of this beloved country, I can hardly put into words what an honour it is to be part of this moment in our history.”

One session in the just concluded seminar focused on the subject of “Women in Parliament” and included discussion points such as challenges on the road to parliament, obstacles to equal representation and cultural, institutional and economic obstacles and psychological barriers.
