Royals Visit “Ridge To Reef” At The Blue Economy Exhibition

During their tour of the Caribbean, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall participated in several engagements which highlighted the political, cultural and economic links between Grenada and the United Kingdom.

The final event on their Grenada itinerary included the Blue Economy Exhibition, which showcased Grenada’s role in piloting sustainable blue growth and innovative solutions for small island states.

Prince Charles seemed especially interested in the GEF/UNDP Ridge to Reef (R2R) Project achievements which exemplify an integrated and participatory approach to natural resources management across Grenada.

HRHs displayed a keen interest in the project’s interventions with community stakeholders, such as the farmers and fisherfolk trained in climate-smart agriculture and sustainable fishing practices respectively. While engaged in discussions with the R2R Project Coordinator, Rudo Udika, Prince Charles enquired about various aspects of the R2R display poster and was particularly curious about the illustration of youngsters collecting plastic bottles and championing the “Ridge to Reef” approach to sustainable ecosystems.

The Ridge to Reef Project aims to ensure that biodiversity and ecosystems functions within and around marine and terrestrial Protected Areas in Grenada are better protected from threats through the adoption of an integrated “Ridge to Reef” approach. This approach increases PAs management effectiveness and applies targeted sustainable land and coastal (and sea) management practices, while ensuring ecosystems resilience to climate change.

Indeed, HRHs seemed to enjoy Grenada’s Blue Economy Exhibition which included a brief overview of the Ridge to Reef Project.
