15 From The Sister Isles To Undergo STCW In Trinidad

Beausejour, Carriacou – Fifteen (15) seafarers from the Sister-Isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are amongst a total of twenty-five (25) Grenadians selected to undergo Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping at the Caribbean Fisheries Training & Development Institute in Trinidad.

The initiative was organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and the Arts with support from the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs in an effort of familiarizing young and aspiring seamen with the basic marine safety training which includes firefighting, first aid, personal survival techniques and personal safety and social responsibility.

At a special meeting held with selected applicants from Carriacou, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Ms. Rholda Quamina, encouraged the selected applicants to make the best use of the opportunity as it is a pre-requisite for any sea related career.

Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government and Legal Affairs, Hon. Kindra Maturine-Stewart, noted that with reports from the selection committee of over 100 applications, a request was further made in cabinet for another batch from Carriacou and Petite Martinique to benefit from STCW before year end.

Minister Stewart added that the government continues to live up to its mandate of providing necessary training aiding in the development of young people throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The STCW will run from Tuesday, 23rd April – May 3rd, 2019.
