The Government of Grenada is the recipient of EC$4.6 million (EUR 1.5 million) from the European Union that will go towards health sector reform with the ultimate aim of improving the delivery of services to citizens. The assistance is part of an overall grant of EC$14.7 million.
The construction of the Gouyave Medical Centre represents the flagship facility of the revitalized National Primary Health (PHC) Care Program, with the provision of expanded services.
Additionally, some of the grant funding will be in the form of technical assistance that will go towards addressing the high incidence of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCD). A survey on risk factors contributing to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiac diseases and cancer will be carried out with methodology developed by PAHO.
Community based activities in selected parishes will also be implemented by the Non State Actors Panel in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. These activities will seek to enhance the knowledge of persons living with, and their caregivers, about CNCDs such as diabetes and hypertension.
The development of the legislative framework for a National Health Insurance Scheme, and the strengthening of health management information systems are other areas where support is planned. Finally, the EU will continue to support national capacity building for the efficient implementation of projects and programmes financed primarily under the European Development Fund.
