The Ministry Of Health Is Closely Monitoring Developments Telated To Reported Cases Of Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) From The Region Of Wuhan In China.

The Ministry notes that based on indication from the World Health Organization (WHO) that the Caribbean is at a very low risk at this time; there is absolutely no cause for alarm in Grenada. However, the situation warrants close attention and an evidence-based response.

The WHO’s position does not currently recommend any travel advisory for China, or additional measures at airports beyond our established mechanisms.

Acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Francis Martin, told the GIS that given the fact that there is clear evidence of human to human transmission, persons should increase their level of hand and cough hygiene, meaning to wash hand more thoroughly and frequently and to use recommended techniques when coughing.

Importantly, however, the CMO added that there have been no reported cases of infection in our region and he reassures the public that the Ministry of Health will continue to consult with its international and regional partners including the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in preparation for an evidence-based response in Grenada.

“This to us is very important, because we believe that our approach to this new virus must be careful and systemic,” he explained.

Meanwhile, earlier today (Wednesday, January 22), Grenada participated in an international online meeting where further updates were provided on novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Following Wednesday’s meeting, the Ministry took the decision to activate its Surveillance Task-force and appropriately increase surveillance at all ports of entry.

HEALTH TIP: Your best defense is a good offense. So always practice general infection control measures, such as frequent hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
