Grenada Prepares To Observe Commonwealth Day

Plans are afoot by the Ministries of Youth Development, Sports, Culture and the Arts, Climate Resilience, Foreign Affairs and the British High Commission, to observe Commonwealth Day 2020.

The day is celebrated annually on the second Monday in March each year, to recognise the work of Commonwealth member states and to promote understanding and cooperation on global issues.

In Grenada, the day’s observance on Monday, 9 March will include an expo and sitting of the second session of the National Youth Parliament.

Discussions will focus on Grenada’s fight against plastic pollution and policy framework by government to address the overall issue of climate change.

The activities will also include presentations by the Presentation Brothers College Choir and speeches from Government Ministers and other stakeholders.

Grenada first joined the Commonwealth in 1974. Since then it has celebrated the day every year, with school-related activities and other significant initiatives.

Every year a specific theme is chosen for Commonwealth Day. The 2020 theme is “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, and transforming.”

British Resident Commissioner, Wendy Freeman said, “I am delighted to be jointly supporting the Commonwealth Day 2020 Youth Parliament. It will be a good opportunity to highlight the work of the Commonwealth including recent activities in both Grenada and the UK.”
