Grenada’s Prime Minister To Join CARICOM Mission To Guyana

Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell is among four regional Heads of Government who will be part of a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mission to Guyana this week.

Dr. Mitchell announced Tuesday that he will join CARICOM Chairman, Honourable Mia Mottley of Barbados, Honourable Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica for the one-day mission to Guyana on Wednesday.

The mission is part of efforts at the CARICOM level to call for a “peaceful and lawful completion of the electoral process in Guyana”.

Dr. Mitchell said, “The CARICOM mission includes some of the longer serving Heads of Government in the region and together with the Chairman of CARICOM, we are hoping to impress upon the political parties in Guyana, the need to allow the democratic process to prevail. The vote counting must resume and the Statement of Polls must be respected.”

The Prime Minister also cited the potential implications of another regional country experiencing political instability. He said, “We are already faced with political instability in Venezuela and Haiti, adding a third country to this list could help to undermine our position as one of the safest regions in the world. We therefore must do everything possible to resolve the situation, not only in Guyana, but also in Haiti and Venezuela.”
