Grenada Tradesā€™ Union Council Calls For Urgent Meeting With Minister For Health

TheĀ Grenada TradesĀ UnionĀ CouncilĀ (GTUC)Ā hasĀ writtenĀ toĀ theĀ Minister forĀ Health,Ā HonourableĀ NickolasĀ Steele,Ā anotherĀ letterĀ requestingĀ an urgentĀ meetingĀ toĀ discussĀ Governmentā€˜sĀ responseĀ andĀ preparationĀ toĀ preventĀ workersĀ andĀ theĀ populationĀ fromĀ contractingĀ theĀ CoronaĀ Virus. InĀ itsĀ letter,Ā theĀ GTUCĀ madeĀ theĀ followingĀ demandsĀ amongĀ others:Ā ā€“ 1.Ā ThatĀ aĀ meetingĀ beĀ heldĀ urgentlyĀ withĀ theĀ GrenadaĀ Tradesā€˜Ā UnionĀ CouncilĀ andĀ itsĀ AffiliatesĀ sinceĀ weĀ haveĀ membersĀ inĀ theĀ HealthĀ Care,Ā EmergencyĀ Service,Ā AirĀ andĀ SeaĀ PortsĀ (borderĀ control),Ā HotelsĀ andĀ PublicĀ spacesĀ whoĀ standsĀ aĀ higherĀ riskĀ ofĀ exposureĀ toĀ theĀ disease. 2.Ā ThatĀ theĀ GovernmentĀ recogniseĀ thatĀ COVIDā€“19Ā isĀ anĀ OccupationalĀ SafetyĀ andĀ HealthĀ threat. 3.Ā ThatĀ comprehensiveĀ Personal ProtectiveĀ EquipmentĀ (PPE)Ā beĀ providedĀ toĀ allĀ frontā€“line workersĀ andĀ thoseĀ whoĀ mayĀ encounterĀ infectedĀ people. 4.Ā TheĀ rights ofĀ allĀ workersĀ beĀ respectedĀ toĀ removeĀ themselvesĀ fromĀ situationsĀ thatĀ they considerĀ posesĀ anĀ imminentĀ orĀ seriousĀ dangerĀ toĀ lifeĀ orĀ healthĀ inĀ keepingĀ withĀ SectionĀ 74Ā (2)Ā (e)Ā ofĀ theĀ EmploymentĀ Act. 5.Ā ToĀ ensureĀ thatĀ noĀ workerĀ suffersĀ anyĀ lossĀ ofĀ payĀ duringĀ anyĀ periodĀ ofĀ quarantine. TheĀ GTUCĀ madeĀ itĀ clearĀ thatĀ itsĀ concernsĀ wereĀ forĀ allĀ workersĀ inĀ Grenada,Ā CarriacouĀ andĀ PetitĀ Martinique,Ā whetherĀ unionizedĀ orĀ ununionized,Ā casual,Ā contractĀ orĀ permanentĀ inĀ theĀ formalĀ orĀ informalĀ sectors. TheĀ GrenadaĀ Tradesā€˜Ā UnionĀ CouncilĀ calledĀ forĀ anĀ urgentĀ meetingĀ withĀ theĀ MinisterĀ forĀ HealthĀ andĀ otherĀ relevantĀ personnelĀ fromĀ theĀ MinistryĀ ofĀ HealthĀ toĀ beĀ heldĀ onĀ Friday,Ā MarchĀ 6,Ā 2020Ā atĀ 0900Ā hrs.
