The Grenada Trades Union Council (GTUC) has written to the Minister for Health, Honourable Nickolas Steele, another letter requesting an urgent meeting to discuss Government‘s response and preparation to prevent workers and the population from contracting the Corona Virus. In its letter, the GTUC made the following demands among others: – 1. That a meeting be held urgently with the Grenada Trades‘ Union Council and its Affiliates since we have members in the Health Care, Emergency Service, Air and Sea Ports (border control), Hotels and Public spaces who stands a higher risk of exposure to the disease. 2. That the Government recognise that COVID–19 is an Occupational Safety and Health threat. 3. That comprehensive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) be provided to all front–line workers and those who may encounter infected people. 4. The rights of all workers be respected to remove themselves from situations that they consider poses an imminent or serious danger to life or health in keeping with Section 74 (2) (e) of the Employment Act. 5. To ensure that no worker suffers any loss of pay during any period of quarantine. The GTUC made it clear that its concerns were for all workers in Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, whether unionized or ununionized, casual, contract or permanent in the formal or informal sectors. The Grenada Trades‘ Union Council called for an urgent meeting with the Minister for Health and other relevant personnel from the Ministry of Health to be held on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 0900 hrs.
