GAA Delivers a Major Upgrade and Expansion Project at Lauriston Airport

HILLSBOROUGH, CARRIACOU: The Lauriston Airport in Carriacou is undergoing major upgrades and expansion at a cost of E.C $250,000.00 and is one of the Grenada Airports Authority (GAA) budgeted priority projects for the year 2020.

The installation of a brand-new Security Check X-ray Baggage Scanner; the construction of an isolation room; the construction of a waiting area for arriving passengers; the expansion of the departure lounge area and the construction of a testing station all underscores the upgrading and expansion project.

Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Airports Authority, Wendy Francette-Williams, in highlighting the scope of the project at a visit on Friday said that although the Grenada Airports Authority is cash-strapped due to budgetary cuts caused by COVID-19, the GAA saw it fitting to execute the upgrading and expansion of the Lauriston Airport, in order to be aligned with airport industry standards. The work will be completed by December 2020.

She added that the Grenada Airports Authority is already looking into remapping the airspace and expanding the runway system at the Lauriston Airport to accommodate bigger aircrafts – a project which will begin by end of the year.

Jacob Andrew, Lauriston Airport Manager, is happy that the GAA has taken the COVID-19 situation into consideration upon designing the project. He said this will aid both in the safety of workers and passengers.

Andrew added that the combined efforts the Grenada Airports Authority and the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government have done and continues to do to improve the standards at the Lauriston Airport is well appreciated by workers at the airport.

Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government, Hon. Kindra Maturine-Stewart, who also visited the project, commended the Grenada Airports Authority for keeping to its promises and ensuring that the Lauriston Airport was brought up to airport standards, an initiative that also supports the holistic development of Carriacou.
