Mathato Notsi (aged 29) gives her baby, Mpho the twice daily dose of anti retroviral medicines. Mathato discovered that she and her baby are HIV positive six weeks after giving birth at an examination. She did not test for HIV when she was pregnant so neither she nor the baby received the drugs nevirapine or AZT to prevent HIV transmission at birth. As a result, the baby was born HIV positive. Paediatric doses of anti retroviral drugs are only available for 25% of children in Lesotho. Mathato???s baby is one of the ones receiving this lifesaving antiretroviral treatment and has recovered after being very ill. 85% of women in Lesotho cannot access Prevention of Mother to Child transmission services. UNICEF is supporting the government of Lesotho to roll out these services. There remains a long way to go.
