Grenada Cultural Foundation Extends Condolences On Passing Of Sandra DesVignes Millington ‘Singing Sandra’

The Grenada Cultural Foundation extends heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of  Sandra DesVignes Millington, Singing Sandra.

We have lost a special gem that has given us so much to celebrate her life. A devout cultural  icon that proudly showcased her strong African Heritage. She left no stone unturn in ensuring  she shared the teachings of our African Culture via her music and her fashionable presence. A  voice for the voiceless she resonated across barriers bringing soul searching messages of  struggles in the true fashion of a griot.

Always comfortable in her own skin and extremely proud of her Grenadian heritage, she held  her strong bonds to Grenada closely to her heart especially with the folks in Gouyave. Singing  Sandra was indeed a champion for women and reminded us of our self-preservation as women

in her timeless rendition of ‘Die with my Dignity’. Her powerful, soul reaching vocals brought  the ‘power down’ on many occasions and proclaimed vehemently the ‘Voices from the Ghetto’.

She was the first female calypsonian to win the Calypso Monarch title in Trinidad and Tobago  on two occasions in 1999 and 2003.

This vibrant performer created some spell-bounding performances that left audiences in awe of  her infectious and dynamic persona. Sandra was loved and cherished by many. She embraced  everyone with open arms and a welcoming smile and was called “Mother’ by many for her  nurturing nature.

The Grenada Cultural foundation moans the loss of this Caribbean great but most of all for this  true Grenadian woman that believed in her rooted ancestry in the town of Gouyave.

Sing soulfully with the angels Sandra, for it is believed that you used your God given talent to  share the good news across the earth.

On the behalf of the board, management and staff of the GCF and by extension the cultural  fraternity in Grenada we thank you for your invaluable contribution to the artform.

Journey safely beloved sister.

Rest in peace dear ‘mother’.
