Hillsborough, Carriacou- Eight (8) ruminant farmers in Petite Martinique have received hands-on training in multi-nutrient block making in an initiative organized by the Climate Smart Agriculture & Rural Enterprise Programme –SAEP.
The training, which was held on Wednesday, is expected to improve the farming techniques of ruminant farmers.
Jevon Enoe, Extension Assistant for Carriacou and Petite Martinique in the Climate Smart Agriculture & Rural Enterprise Project, (SAEP) says it is of paramount importance that farmers demonstrate resilience in their strategies to mitigate against the adverse effects of climate change, especially during dry spells and droughts which are common in our region.
He says the multi-nutrient block which is made up of Urea, Salt, Wheat Middling, Molasses, Water, Scums, Cement and Dicalcium phosphate helps with fattening micro-organisms in animals and can be used as a supplement during the dry season.
Enoe added that farmers were also introduced to a variety of grasses that are resilient to harsh temperatures and contain high protein content which can be used for their farming.
Participant, Akiesha Clarke, applauded SAEP for extending the training to ruminant farmers in Petite Martinique. She is anxious to implement the new technique in her farming.
The training was facilitated by Former District Agricultural Officer for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Mr. Edwin Duncan.
