CARICOM Calls For Ceasefire In Israel-Palestine Conflict

GEORGETOWN – CARICOM said on Tuesday it continues to support a two-state solution as “the best way” to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a brief media statement on the issue, the regional integration organisation added its voice to individuals and groups around the world pressing for an end to the violence.

“CARICOM is gravely concerned by the recent escalation in violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” the statement said.

“CARICOM joins the international community in calling for an immediate ceasefire and end to hostilities.

“CARICOM continues to support the United Nations’ efforts towards a two-state solution as the best way forward.”

More than 200 Palestinians, including children, have been killed and an excess of 1 500 others injured in Israeli airstrikes since May 10.

The latest outbreak of violence began in east Jerusalem last month, after an Israeli court ordered the evictions of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem.

The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is seen as occupied territory under international law, thus making all Jewish settlements there illegal. (AR)
