The exciting conclusion of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) U13 Boys Tournament is set for Sunday 12th December,2021 at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium. The teams, representing the parishes will be in action to claim the title in this development competition which will assist the GFA in selecting players for the CONCACAF U15 level.
The top contenders for the title are St. Patrick’s Crown City Strikers, St. Andrew’s Big Parish Stars and St. Mark’s Western Stars with three (3) wins and one (1) loss a piece following the first four (4) rounds of matches. However, Crown City Strikers lead with a goal difference of +6 while Big Parish Stars and Western Stars each have a goal difference of +5.
The fourth (4th) round of matches was played on August 14 at the Bellevue Playing Field with wins for Western Stars, Crown City Strikers and St. John’s Dolphins. The final and fifth round was subsequently postponed due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in August 2021. Coaches are reporting that the young footballers were excited to get back to practice and are looking forward to the final round of matches.
GFA Technical Director Jerry Alexis says overall the tournament has been good. We have identified talent to be nurtured for the U15 level while parish coaches will continue to work with them to develop their skills. He further stated, “In the new year, we hope to have more sponsors supporting this tournament to provide additional incentives for the young players.”
On Sunday each team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) will be recognized along with the Tournament MVP, Golden Gloves and Golden Boots. Teams are expected to play 60-minute matches with kick off at 2:00 p.m. Fans are not allowed due to the COVID-19 regulations and permission granted by the Royal Grenada Police Force.
