WASHINGTON, May 17, 2022—The World Bank Group (WBG) approved $15 million of International Development Association finance to make Grenada’s transport infrastructure more resilient to the impacts of climate change and natural hazards. The Grenada Resilience Improvement Project will finance interventions to protect principal transport corridors against coastal erosion fueled by sea level rise and flooding at the crossing of the country’s largest river. Furthermore, this operation will support the development of risk-informed strategies to assist the government in planning and prioritization of future resilience investments at additional critical sites.
Grenada has taken bold steps to build resilience to climate and disaster risks and is on the forefront of this agenda in the Caribbean. Anchored by a strong legal and institutional framework, the Government subscribes to a 360-degree approach to resilience with policy advancements in the environmental and climate, urban, fiscal, social, and gender sectors.
“Grenada is significantly exposed to natural and climate-related hazards that includes, among others, flooding, coastal erosion, and landslides. With the intensifying impacts of climate change it is important to make the right investments now to build disaster resilience and mitigate the risk of these shocks,” said Lilia Burunciuc, Caribbean Countries Director. “Strengthening Grenada’s principal road corridors will be key for Grenada’s human and social development, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.”
