More Than EC $6.3 Million Awarded In Scholarships

Eighty-eight (88) students were awarded  scholarships worth more than EC$6.3 million during a virtual scholarship awards ceremony hosted  by the Ministry of Education on Oct. 21.

Scholarships were awarded in seven categories, with 22 going towards UWI economic costs; 42  for SGU undergraduate studies and 17 for SGU master’s programmes; two for the China  undergraduate and two for the China graduate programmes; one from the OAS and two  Commonwealth UK awards.

Study areas include biochemistry, civil/chemical/computer and electrical engineering, economics  and accounting, law, psychology, social work, meteorology, political science, sports science,  information technology, tourism and hospitality management, marine wildlife conservation  biology, economics in International Business and Cross Border E-Commerce, earthquake  engineering and education.

Noting the 45-year history of awarding full-tuition scholarships to Grenadian students, SGU’s  Associate Dean of Admissions Colin Dowe said, “At this point, annually, we award over 120 full tuition scholarships to Grenadians across all programmes. It is one thing for education to be  available here in Grenada. It’s quite another question as to whether or not it is accessible, and this  partnership allows for the accessibility of tertiary education to Grenadians.”

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada, His  Excellency, Wei Hongtian, announced that from October 2022 China reopened to international  students pursuing face-to-face study. His Excellency also praised the great collaboration, between  China and Grenada for the past 17 years, since restored diplomatic ties in 2005.

He said, “The Chinese Government has also arranged a slew of policies to improve the quality of  all the students studying in China. Today, I would like to take this occasion to confirm that the  Chinese Government Scholarship Programme will continue to offer 15 full scholarships to  Grenadian students in 2023 and it is open for applications from now.”

Minister for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture Sen. the Hon. David Andrew congratulated the  awardees, noting that his administration aspires to have at least one university graduate per  household.

“It is an important day for us, too, as an administration, because it underscores this administration’s  emphasis on education; this administration’s policy position; this administration’s viewpoint that  education is probably one of the single most important tools for transforming our economy; for  transforming our society,” Hon. Andrew said. “I want to put on record our appreciation to the

University of the West Indies, St. George’s University, the Organisation of American States, the  Commonwealth UK Awards; the People’s Republic of China. I want to thank all of you for  continuing to partner with us to see more and more of our citizens aspire to higher heights in  education.”

On behalf of her fellow awardees, scholarship recipient, Rheanna Mann, thanked all involved for  their continuous support and dedication towards the development of education in Grenada.
