Hillsborough, Carriacou- Veterinary services will now be available to livestock farmers on Carriacou and Petite Martinique. At a meeting in September with farmers, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government, Hon. Tevin Andrews, announced that soon veterinary services will be made accessible to them. Now, within less than two (2) months, the Minister’s promise has been fulfilled.
Lisa Walker has been appointed to serve as veterinary officer. Walker, who is presently attached to the Climate Smart Agriculture and Rural Enterprise Programme as an Extension Assistant, holds a diploma and associate degree in Animal Health Production and Veterinary Public Health. At the moment, she is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies and Entrepreneurship.
Minister Andrews said he is happy that he can fulfill another of his campaign promises. He said that the appointment of Walker, the first female to hold the position here, is going to see positive change in agriculture as his Government works on positively transforming the sector.
The previous veterinary officer retired in 2016, and the post has been vacant since then. Over the years the Division of Agriculture within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government received supported from the Livestock Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture, Grenada.
Walker will be supported by consultant Dr. Linton Andrews. A training session is being planned for livestock farmers here at the Limlair Livestock Station.
