Equipping Disaster Management Members And Volunteers With The Necessary Skills

Strengthening the competency levels of the members of the local disaster committee, and also of volunteers on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, is the key focus of a two-day training organized by the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA).

Psychosocial support, which is being facilitated by Nadina McLawrence-Williams, is one of the areas of training.

Karl Benjamin is conducting a session on “Relief Supplies Management’’; and Davron Phillip, the IT and Telecommunications Officer with NaDMA, is facilitating training in telecommunications.

Another focus of the training is the train-the-trainers’ aspect, where locals can be utilized in the sharing of disaster management information.

NaDMA, in conducting the training, is being supported by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) through its Country Directed Fund(CDF).

Bernice Date, NaDMA’s Programme Officer for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, said the training is very important. “It is to help committee members and volunteers on both islands better perform their roles and responsibilities and function more efficiently and effectively when a disaster strikes”, Date explained.

And, with the 2024 hurricane season expected to commence from June 1st, Date said people can expect more training in the different areas.
