Japan Hands Over Emergency Relief Supplies To Grenada

On 22 July 2024, the Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), handed over emergency relief supplies (tents, sleeping pads, tarpaulins, and water purifiers) to the Government of Grenada in response to the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Beryl.

The handover ceremony was attended by the Honourable Joseph Andall, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development of Grenada; Dr Terence Walters, National Coordinator, National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA); His Excellency Yutaka Matsubara, Ambassador of Japan, and Ichiro Mimura, Chief Representative, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) St Lucia Office.

During the handover ceremony, Dr Walters expressed his gratitude to the Government and the People of Japan, conveying that the emergency relief supplies from Japan are truly needed by the residents of the areas severely damaged by Hurricane Beryl, and will be promptly and appropriately distributed. In response, Mimura expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery in the affected regions, and determined to continue exchanging knowledge and experience between Japan and the Caribbean region, which are both prone to natural disasters. Ambassador Matsubara reaffirmed his awareness of the devastation caused by the hurricane in the northern part of mainland Grenada after visiting the region and expressed his hope that Japan’s assistance will contribute to the speedy recovery of the impacted areas. Lastly, Minister Andall remarked on the longstanding friendship between Japan and Grenada and expressed his gratitude for Japan’s prompt assistance and support.

The Government of Japan wishes for the fastest recovery of Grenada and will continue to provide assistance to the Caribbean region to overcome the vulnerabilities particular to Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
