Sporting Icons Among 13 Set To Receive Honorary Degrees

caribbean.loopnews-The University of the West Indies (UWI) is set to honour 13 distinguished individuals with honorary doctorates in recognition of their significant contributions across various fields.

Among the recipients are celebrated sports figures Sir Curtly Ambrose from Antigua and Kirani James from Grenada, who will be honoured for their remarkable achievements in cricket and athletics, respectively.

The 2024 honorary degrees will be conferred during the UWI’s graduation ceremonies, which are scheduled to run from October 12 to November 9, 2024, across the university’s five campuses.

Five Islands Campus – October 12

  • Sir Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose of Antigua and Barbuda will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his outstanding contributions to cricket.
  • His Excellency Ambassador Dr W Aubrey Webson of Antigua and Barbuda will also be awarded a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his extensive work in human rights advocacy.

Cave Hill Campus – October 19

  • Dame Susan Dilys Dougan, Governor General of St Vincent and The Grenadines, will be honoured with a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for her public service and educational contributions.
  • Sir Trevor Hassell of Barbados will receive a Doctor of Science (DSc) for his advancements in medicine.
  • Elton Deighton Elombe Mottley of Barbados will be awarded a Doctor of Letters (DLitt) for his contributions to culture and the arts.
  • Ralph Taylor of Barbados will be honoured with a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his impact on the tourism sector.

St. Augustine Campus – October 24 to 26

  • Dr Maniram Ragbir of Trinidad and Tobago/Britain will receive a Doctor of Science (DSc) for his work as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
  • Dr Patricia Rodney of Guyana will be honoured with a Doctor of Science (DSc) for her dual roles as a medical practitioner and human rights defender.

Mona Campus – October 31 to November 2

  • Donald Anderson of Jamaica will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his achievements as an entrepreneur, market researcher, and sports administrator.
  • Monte Blake of Jamaica will be awarded a Doctor of Letters (DLitt) for his pioneering contributions to music.
  • Courtney Campbell of Jamaica will be honoured with a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his work as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.
  • Dr Conrad Douglas of Jamaica will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his development efforts in the bauxite industry.

Global Campus – November 9

  • Kirani James of Grenada will be awarded a Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his excellence in athletics.
