In a generous act of support for youth development and sports education, renowned African businessman and philanthropist Mr. Aliko Dangote has donated 1,000 Gowin Dangote Cricket Kits to students across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
On Thursday, October 30th, Government Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, and Caretakers personally delivered kits to schools and clubs, with all distributions to be completed within a one-week window.
The “Empowering Dreams Through Cricket” initiative is part of the Government of Grenada’s ongoing commitment to transforming lives through inclusive and accessible sporting opportunities. It marks a bold step toward revitalizing grassroots cricket and nurturing future champions by equipping schools, clubs, and communities with essential gear to foster skill development and national pride in the Caribbean’s beloved sport.
The kits include high-quality equipment such as English willow bats, protective gear, and coaching tools designed to enhance training and performance. Distribution targeted primary, secondary, and tertiary government institutions, as well as cricket clubs and academies, under the banner “Equipping the Future of the Game.”
Each handover featured a brief address that emphasized the importance of sports, physical activity, and cricket as vital tools for personal growth and national development. Presenters expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Aliko Dangote for his generous contribution, and to Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell for his steadfast commitment to youth empowerment. The addresses also celebrated the legacy of Grenadian cricket icons such as Junior Murray, Devon Smith, Rawle Lewis, Andre Fletcher, and Afy Fletcher—figures whose achievements continue to inspire young athletes across the nation.
“This contribution is a game-changer for many of our young athletes,” said Hon. Delma Thomas, Minister for Youth and Sports. “It not only enhances access to proper gear but also inspires our students to pursue excellence in cricket.”
“Investing in our youth through sport is not just about creating athletes—it’s about building character, discipline, and gaining opportunity. Cricket is our Caribbean game, and it has the power to unite communities and inspire greatness. With the right support, every young Grenadian can rise to their full potential, because there is greatness in every Grenadian, and initiatives like this help unlock it,” highlighted Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell.
This initiative aligns with Grenada’s national goals of promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and discipline among youth, while strengthening the island’s cricket culture. It also underscores the belief that there is “Greatness in Every Grenadian,” and that with the right tools and support, the next generation of cricket stars can rise from every corner of the nation.
Special arrangements were also made for Carriacou, with kits transported via Osprey Lines on Tuesday, October 28th, supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Carriacou Affairs.
