Grenada\u2019s disaster management capacity received a significant boost\u00a0 Thursday with the donation by the US Government of two field hospitals and two\u00a0 Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs), valued at US $7.5 million.<\/p>\n
The 40-bed hospitals and EOCs were facilitated through the US Southern Command\u2019s\u00a0 Humanitarian Assistance Programme.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister and Minister for Disaster Management,\u00a0Dr. the Right Honourable Keith\u00a0\u00a0Mitchell, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the US Government and in particular, US\u00a0\u00a0Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Linda Taglialatela, for the donation.<\/p>\n
He recalled making the request for a field hospital a few months ago and the ambassador\u00a0\u00a0immediately answering in the affirmative.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said the hospitals and EOCs represent a significant contribution to Grenada\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0COVID-19 response mechanism and considerably strengthens the country\u2019s disaster\u00a0\u00a0management capacity.<\/p>\n
Referring to the donation as the latest demonstration of US support for Grenada, he said,\u00a0\u00a0\u201cOur countries\u00a0have a long history of relations and there have been many instances of\u00a0 generosity over the decades. However, today\u2019s donation is particularly special given the\u00a0 context of the period that we are in and the challenges facing Governments around the\u00a0 world. It is therefore heartening that our friends would still come to our aid at this particular\u00a0 time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Over the last few days, more than 20 persons have been trained in the maintenance of\u00a0\u00a0the field hospitals and the Prime Minister welcomed the inclusion of persons from\u00a0\u00a0Carriacou.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cThe timing of this donation allows us the luxury of time to ensure that persons\u00a0 are adequately trained to operate the field hospitals. I know that the trainees have been\u00a0 involved in very intense sessions over the past few days and I\u2019m quite happy to see the<\/p>\n
inclusion of our sisters and brothers from Carriacou, as one of the field hospitals would\u00a0 be based in Carriacou to serve both sister islands.\u201d<\/p>\n
Health Minister, Honourable Nickolas Steele also welcomed the donation and thanked\u00a0 the United States for its continued support of the health sector. Like the Prime Minister,\u00a0 he acknowledged the donation as an indication of the longstanding friendship between\u00a0 the two countries.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, the US Ambassador said the past two years have been quite challenging\u00a0 but the United States has remained firm in its support, donating test kits, personal\u00a0 protective equipment, thousands of vaccines, and now the field hospitals.<\/p>\n
She said the donation enhances the partnership between the US and Grenada and\u00a0 expressed her country\u2019s ongoing commitment to building and maintaining partnerships to\u00a0 fight threats that don\u2019t respect borders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
