JAMAICA OBSERVER \u2013 St Jago High\u2019s Jamora Alves surprised the field to win the girls Class One discus throw gold medal on Wednesday\u2019s second day of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association\/GraceKennedy Boys\u2019 and Girls\u2019 Athletics Championships at National Stadium, throwing a personal best 48.31m.<\/p>\n
The Grenadian also sent a message that she will have her eyes on an even bigger prize at next weekend\u2019s Carifta Games to be held at the same venue.<\/p>\n
Wednesday\u2019s event lived up to its billing and produced exciting competition as Alves, who is also in the javeline final, ended the competition with two big throws as she got 47.49m in the fifth round.<\/p>\n
Camperdown\u2019s Britannie Johnson took the silver medal with 46.54m, just two centimetres ahead of Edwin Allen\u2019s Damali Williams\u2019 46.52m.<\/p>\n
Holmwood Technical\u2019s Cedricka Williams, who was expectd to medal, finished seventh with 44.69m.<\/p>\n
Camperdown\u2019s Victoria Christie, who led the qualifying, won the Class Two girls shot put with a mark of 14.59m, the first female gold medal of the championships.<\/p>\n
Natassia Burrell of Hydel High took the silver medal with 13.99m, just better then the 13.81m she threw on Tuesday, while Maja Henry of Immaculate Conception was third with 13.51m.<\/p>\n
Christie was dominant in the final as she had two other throws that were better than Burell\u2019s, throwing 14.12m and 14.35m, either of which could have won the gold medal.<\/p>\n
Friday\u2019s girls Class One shot put final is set to be a cracker, with at least five of the finalists from Class Two last year, including the winner, Alves of St Jago, qualifying for the decider after Wednesday\u2019s preliminaries.<\/p>\n
Camperdown\u2019s Brittania Johnson led the qualifying with a best of 14.01m, followed by Edwin Allen\u2019s Rochele Solmon, the Class Two silver medallist last year, who threw 13.24m on Wednesday, while Alves, the Grenadian, was next with 12.74m.<\/p>\n
Immaculate Conception\u2019s Juliet Smith (12.56m); St Jago\u2019s Tafada Wright (12.43m); Britannie Johnson, who was fourth in Class Two last year, threw 12.00m, and Holmwood Technical\u2019s discus specialist Cedricka Williams also made it through the first round.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Edwin Allen\u2019s Dionjah Shaw threw 41.58m, the longest in the Class Three girls discus throw preliminaries, with Holmwood Technical\u2019s Regena Case in second with 35.66m, Kimeka Smith of St Jago High was next with 34.80m, and Immaculate Conception\u2019s Jada Francis 34.28m.<\/p>\n
Tishanna Salmon of Edwin Allen led the Class Four long jump qualifiers with her wind-aided 5.24m (3.2m\/s), while Hydel High\u2019s Sashana Johnson with 5.20m (-0.1m\/s), Yasheika Sinclair of Edwin Allen with 5.10m (0.0m\/s), and Wolmer\u2019s Girls\u2019 Renae Escoe with a wind-aided 4.91m (4.8m\/s) were the top qualifiers.<\/p>\n
Four athletes were able to get the automatic qualifying mark of 1.65m to lead the qualification to the finals of the Class Four girls high jump: Shanniqua Williams and Daneille Noble of Wolmer\u2019s Girls\u2019, Sabrina Atkinson of Hydel High, and Asia McKay of Edwin Allen High.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
