Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt.Hon. Keith Mitchell has welcomed new World\u00a0 Bank Country Director for Grenada, Ms. Lilia Burunciuc, who has responsibility for maintaining the partnership with Caribbean countries to address their development\u00a0\u00a0challenges.<\/p>\n
During her first visit to Grenada, Ms. Burunciuc had a series of meetings with senior\u00a0 Government officials including the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
In welcoming her, Dr. Mitchell noted that Grenada and its Caribbean neighbours face a\u00a0 particularly challenging period given the impact of the pandemic, coupled with the effects\u00a0 of the current war in Ukraine which is already causing an increase in some prices.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell also cited the potential impact of the recent High Court ruling on the pension\u00a0 matter. He said, \u201cIt is therefore important that our friends in the international community\u00a0 understand the challenges we are facing and work with us. I am reasonably comfortable\u00a0 that we can manage the turbulent waters that are emerging but it is critical that we all\u00a0 work together in the interest of our country and its people. We\u2019ve had challenges before\u00a0 and we have managed to overcome them; I think we will also get through this period.\u201d<\/p>\n
In her remarks, Ms. Burunciuc assured the Prime Minister that the World Bank will\u00a0 continue to support Grenada and other countries it works with. Grenada is on the verge\u00a0 of getting US $25 million as a first tranche which forms part of a World Bank Supported\u00a0 Recovery and Resilience Programmatic Development Policy Credit (DPC) Programme.<\/p>\n
She also noted that Grenada is one of the more active countries on the regional agenda,\u00a0 with the country due to benefit shortly from support for two key projects \u2013 Unleashing the\u00a0 Blue Economy and Data for Decision Making.<\/p>\n
She further stated that Grenada stands to benefit from additional financing to support\u00a0 critical areas such as skills development and innovation.<\/p>\n
The World Bank official also flagged energy efficiency as another area of potential benefit\u00a0 and the Prime Minister welcomed this, noting that the energy issue is fundamental and\u00a0 has wide-ranging implications for overall development, given its impact on the cost of\u00a0 operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
