Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt.Hon. Keith Mitchell has assured members of\u00a0 the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) that Government will continue to work\u00a0 collaboratively with stakeholders as it seeks to resolve the pension issue following the\u00a0 recent High Court ruling.<\/p>\n
In his latest engagement with senior members of the RGPF on Tuesday, Dr. Mitchell\u00a0 described the pension matter as a crucial one, stating that Government must be practical\u00a0 in its approach.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell who is also the Minister for National Security, said, \u201cWhen we are in a position\u00a0 of leadership, we have to demonstrate that ability to lead, particularly on matters that have\u00a0 implications for the entire country. We may solve something today, but when there are\u00a0 implications for future generations \u2013 our children and grandchildren, we must be thorough\u00a0 in our decision-making. This pension ruling has enormous implications, not just financial\u00a0 but also legal \u2013 the decision impacts the legality of some of the things that are being done\u00a0 now, including Government\u2019s top-up of NIS pension payments.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister further reiterated that the issue is complex. He said, \u201cIt\u2019s not as simple\u00a0 as appeal or don\u2019t appeal, pay or not pay. Even if we agree on compensation, we have\u00a0 to find the money. It\u2019s really not hard and fast, one position or another, we have to deal\u00a0 with this rationally. We will continue our engagements with stakeholders including trade\u00a0 unions, to reach a decision that we can all work with. At the end of the day, this has to be\u00a0 a unified position in the interest of workers, the general population and of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the challenging nature of the pension issue, the Prime Minister emphasised, \u201cWe\u00a0 will work this thing out. We will fix it together, that\u2019s the commitment I make to you today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other matters addressed by the Prime Minister in the almost two-hour long meeting with\u00a0 police officers, included the necessity of maintaining a safe and peaceful environment, improvements to various police stations, the additional month\u2019s salary provided for in the\u00a0 2022 budget announcement and the overall performance of the police force.<\/p>\n
He commended officers for the continuing good performance recorded and highlighted regional recognition for the RGPF. Dr. Mitchell noted the recent announcement that a\u00a0 detective from Grenada secured the Top Crime-Fighter Award for 2021 from the\u00a0 Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police; the second time that Grenada will\u00a0 receive this award.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also commended the RGPF on securing the first runner-up position\u00a0 for the Top Community Policing Initiative and expressed the hope that officers will\u00a0 continue to be motivated to strive for excellence in the execution of their duties.<\/p>\n
The questions and comments from police officers included outstanding allowances;\u00a0 improvements to the South St. George Police Station, manpower levels within the force,\u00a0 and striking a better balance between male and female recruits.<\/p>\n
On the pay and grade review issue, a study for which has already been completed, the\u00a0 Prime Minister endorsed the suggestion by the Permanent Secretary with responsibility\u00a0 for the Department of Public Administration, for an interim solution, while Government\u00a0 prepares to undertake a wider review of the entire public service, to ensure that no group\u00a0 of workers is disadvantaged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
