The invaluable contribution,\u00a0 unwavering dedication to the delivery of health care and the numerous sacrifices made\u00a0 by community health nurses across Grenada were recognised by the Community Nursing\u00a0 Division of the Ministry of Health during an appreciation and awards ceremony at Pier-57\u00a0last Thursday.<\/p>\n

The event coincided with this year\u2019s observance of International Nurses Day, which had\u00a0 as its theme:\u00a0Nurses: A Voice to Lead \u2013 Invest in Nursing & respect rights to secure\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>global health.<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Fifteen awards were presented to the winners of various categories including District\u00a0 Nurse, Registered Nurse, and Nursing Assistant. The awardees were chosen from a field\u00a0 of 29 nominees from the six health districts.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Hannah St. Paul, Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Strategic &\u00a0 Operational Management, General & Subsidiary Hospitals, Mt. Gay Psychiatric Hospital\u00a0 & Richmond Home, and Community Health Services, commended the nurses for their\u00a0 heroic efforts and invaluable contribution to the delivery of healthcare to the country.<\/p>\n

St. Paul, a nurse by training, reiterated Government\u2019s commitment to address the issues\u00a0 that are affecting nurses. She spoke of educational and training opportunities and\u00a0 regularisation, as well as improved working conditions as some of the important matters\u00a0 being looked at.<\/p>\n

The nurses were also highly commended by Chief Nursing Officer, Ms. Nester Edwards\u00a0 and the President of the Grenada Nursing Association, Sister Nikesha St. Bernard who\u00a0 acknowledged their yeoman service over the years, particularly during the peak of the\u00a0 COVID-19 pandemic and pledged their unwavering support for members of the nursing\u00a0 profession.<\/p>\n

During her remarks, the Chief Nursing Officer, spoke of the retention plan to curb the\u00a0 migration of nurses, a problem that is plaguing the entire Caribbean region and putting a\u00a0 serious strain on the delivery of healthcare. The community nurses who all expressed\u00a0 appreciation for the gesture, were also addressed by the Chief Community Health Nurse,<\/p>\n

Carol Telesford-Charles, who has been very supportive of her soldiers, not just in good\u00a0 but difficult times as well.<\/p>\n

Hailing nurses as the unsung heroes of Grenada, Nurse Charles saluted current and\u00a0 former nurses for their countless hours of service to humanity. She encouraged the junior\u00a0 nursing professionals to remember their oath, and to always be professional even when\u00a0 the times are tough.<\/p>\n

The Chief Community Health Nurse promised to stand with her colleagues to ensure that\u00a0 they are treated fairly, but at the same time, encouraged them to do their best at all times,\u00a0 respect themselves, their superiors and their clients in the delivery of their services.<\/p>\n
