Today marks another hallmark occasion in the\u00a0 promotion of sustainability in the cocoa value chain as Belmont Estate welcomes De Gallant Cargo Schooner to Grenada\u2019s shores to collect a 4-ton shipment of organic cocoa\u00a0 beans destined for Europe.<\/p>\n
This Fair Transport, wind powered ship, was built in the Netherlands, and launched in\u00a0 1916. Originally a herring logger fishing boat, it has now become a symbol of climate\u00a0 change mitigation and sustainable development. Chartered by the Blue Schooner\u00a0 Company, led by Guillaume Roche and Jeff Lebleu, De Gallant \u201coffers a sailing\u00a0 transportation service while giving to people wishing to live an authentic, human\u00a0 adventure a chance to embark on board,\u201d according to the Blue Schooner Company\u00a0 website. It seeks to spread the message of sustainability in transport and encourages the\u00a0 use of wind in sea transport as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, a climate\u00a0 smart initiative.<\/p>\n
Over the last two years, Belmont Estate embarked on a valuable collaboration with Saveurs et Nature, a chocolate manufacturing company based in France for the development of their chocolate product line infusing locally grown, organic cocoa beans\u00a0 sourced only in Grenada. This relationship was fostered through a collaboration with\u00a0 Crafting Markets of The Netherlands, a specialty cocoa distributor committed to\u00a0 distributing quality, ethical and sustainable cocoa, that connects cocoa farmers with\u00a0 chocolate companies. Belmont Estate, Crafting Markets and Saveurs et Nature, share\u00a0 similar values of fair trade, sustainability, ethical farming and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis exciting venture, piloted in 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic provided alternative business for us during a time when our business here had severely\u00a0 declined,\u201d shared Ms. Shadel Nyack Compton, Managing Director of Belmont Estate. \u201cIn\u00a0 addition, we forged a valuable and strong relationship with Mr. Albert Smith of Crafting\u00a0 Markets and Saveurs et Nature, based on our shared values. Now, Belmont Estate\u2019s cocoa\u00a0 is used by Saveurs et Nature to make a premium bar, using Belmont Estate\u2019s cocoa and\u00a0 marketing Grenada\u2019s fine quality beans. This year, we are excited and grateful to include\u00a0 some farmers from the Grenada Organic Cocoa Farmers\u2019 Co-operative Society Ltd. for this\u00a0 shipment. This been a unique and fruitful partnership, for which we are thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n
This environmental initiative and commitment to climate-smart production practices is\u00a0 not new to Belmont Estate. The Estate has been partnering with the St Patrick\u2019s\u00a0Environmental and Community Tourism Organization (SPECTO) for more than a decade\u00a0 and was a featured contributor to the successful \u201cGlimpse of a Climate-smart future\u201d a\u00a0 zero-carbon, zero-waste SPECTO exhibition in 2018. Belmont\u2019s commitment to Ridge-to\u00a0 \u2013Reef environmental sustainability is aptly demonstrated by this shipment of a terrestrial\u00a0 product across the seas with minimal Greenhouse gas emissions impact.<\/p>\n
The De Gallant was welcomed at Grenada\u2019s port this morning in cooperation with the\u00a0 Grenada Cocoa Association (GCA) and St. Louis Shipping Agency. Accountant for the\u00a0 Grenada Cocoa Association, Mr. Samuel Brathwaite expressed the GCA\u2019s commitment to\u00a0 working with farmers and producers on specialty cocoa like organic, and urged\u00a0 Grenadians to plant more cocoa as the possibilities in the cocoa and chocolate industry\u00a0 are exponential. He also toured the boat and met with crew who will remain on the island\u00a0 until June 13th, 2022 before setting sail back to Europe.<\/p>\n
