The guidance used by health professionals worldwide is being updated based on \u201cnew scientific evidence and conceptual progress\u201d on gender, health and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe review and update process will build on the extensive work already featured in the manual,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/06-07-2022-who-updates-widely-used-gender-mainstreaming-manual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO website reads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new guidance will update \u201ckey concepts around gender,\u201d as well as expanding on the concept of intersectionality, which examines how \u201cgender power dynamics\u201d interact with other hierarchies of privilege or disadvantage, leading to differing health outcomes among those individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The updated manual will also be \u201cgoing beyond non-binary approaches\u201d to recognize that gender identity exists on a continuum and that \u201csex is not limited to male or female,\u201d the WHO says.<\/p>\n<p>The guidance is also expected to introduce \u201cnew gender, equity and human rights frameworks\u201d as well as unspecified tools to further support those concepts.<\/p>\n<p>The review and update of the 146-page manual is being done in partnership with the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the summer and fall of 2022, people will have the opportunity to provide inputs and feedback from reviews of the updates and participate in a validation workshop and\/or the pilots,\u201d the WHO continues.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--related-post__headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The current \u201cGender Mainstreaming for Health Managers: A Practical Approach\u201d manual is billed as a \u201cuser-friendly guide\u201d to raise awareness and develop skills on gender analysis and gender responsive planning in health care.<\/p>\n<p>But some experts are slamming the new guidance as problematic,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-11001673\/Sex-NOT-limited-male-female-Fury-woke-guidance-dismisses-basic-biology.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Daily Mail reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a dismissal of basic biology \u2013 and [a] mistake,\u201d Jenny Gamble, a professor in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at Coventry University told the outlet. \u201cBiology is a key determinant of health and illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new guidance could lead to unforeseen issues, Gamble insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot being clear about basic biology opens the door to a range of problems, including very poor health communication but also distorted data,\u201d Gamble said.<\/p>\n<p>Another expert in nursing and midwifery at Western Sydney University concurred, saying WHO\u2019s new forthcoming guidance is worrisome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wording regarding there being more than male and female sexes is concerning,\u201d Dr. Karleen Gribble told the Daily Mail. \u201cThe website says that the handbook is being updated in light of new scientific evidence and conceptual progress on gender, health and development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s no \u201cscientific evidence\u201d suggesting more than two sexes, Gribble said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, the idea that there are more than two sexes, is a postmodern, unscientific understanding that should not be supported by the WHO,\u201d she told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>WHO officials may be updating its guidance to be more inclusive of intersex individuals, but Gribble believes the new manual may be \u201cinaccurate and stigmatizing.\u201d She\u2019s also worried that women of all ages will suffer considering the increased focus on gender identity, according to the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this occurs, this will almost certainly dilute focus on the severe health disadvantage that women and girls face in many countries because they are female, which can only be a bad thing,\u201d Gribble said. \u201c\u2019Many of us who work internationally in maternal and child health are very concerned about the push to desex language spilling
