Table Tennis and Sports Associations, in general, are being encouraged to initiate\u00a0 programs that would bring about increased women\u2019s participation at all levels of\u00a0 sports.<\/p>\n
That was one of the many recommendations coming out of a \u201cWomen in Sports\u201d\u00a0 activity organized by the Grenada Table Tennis Association (GTTA) and\u00a0 facilitated by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Caribbean and Latin\u00a0 America Participation Officer, Luisana Perez.<\/p>\n
In her presentation, the former Venezuelan 2000 and 2004 Olympic competitor and\u00a0 now ITTF Level Three Coach, highlighted that girls and women athletes in all sports\u00a0 are increasing, noting that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics had 48 percent women athletes.\u00a0 However women coaches in the respective sports were far less in number compared to\u00a0 their male counterparts.<\/p>\n
Perez noted the challenges that women athletes face, with many who compete for\u00a0 several years, choosing to end or limit their involvement in major sports and instead\u00a0 give priority to their family and professional careers.<\/p>\n
However, she argued that if associations make the effort to reach out to them, many\u00a0 might consider refereeing, coaching or becoming administrators. She also advocated\u00a0 for national federations to begin staging regular events that give women a more\u00a0 prominent role.<\/p>\n
Perez noted that gender balance is visible and the respective international federations\u00a0 are constantly staging training programs to enhance the capacity of women. She\u00a0 encouraged national associations to submit projects to their parent bodies for support.<\/p>\n
She also encouraged the GTTA to appoint a woman as its lead to explore the many\u00a0 ITTF opportunities and to develop programs and submit them for ITTF support.<\/p>\n
Perez was the first woman to facilitate an ITTF Level 1 Table Tennis Coaching\u00a0 Course in Grenada. This activity was part of a ten-day development programme,\u00a0 which also included a one-day national training camp.<\/p>\n
Chairwoman of the Grenada Women in Sport Commission Dr. Jane Noel commended\u00a0 the efforts of the Grenadian women who have taken up the challenge to become\u00a0 qualified table tennis coaches and officials. She stated that there\u2019s a great need for\u00a0 more female coaches in general, which has become a criteria for any female team wishing to travel to compete internationally.<\/p>\n
Dr. Noel commended Ministry of Youth and Sports Table Tennis Coach, Rose\u00a0 Dinnoh-Newland for the leading role she has played in promoting table tennis in\u00a0 Gouyave.<\/p>\n
ITTF Coach Luisana Perez also spent time coaching students at Coach Rose Newland\u2019s Table Tennis Academy and at St. John Christian Secondary School.<\/p>\n
The \u201cWomen in Sports\u201d discussion held at the Olympic House on September 6, 2022,\u00a0 concluded Coach Perez\u2019s twelve-day visit to Grenada. Attendees at the event included\u00a0 Acting President of the Grenada Olympic Committee, Chenny Joseph, General\u00a0 Secretary, Veda Victor-Bruno and members of the GTTA Executive and women and\u00a0 men table tennis enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
