Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC) is discontinuing a\u00a0 temporary decrease in the non-fuel rate of electricity that is adversely impacting the\u00a0 Company.<\/p>\n

This 25% decrease per kWh in the non-fuel charge across all customer categories was\u00a0 implemented in January 2022 to provide some relief to electricity customers.<\/p>\n

Clive Hosten, Acting General Manager, noted, \u201cWhile it was understood that the\u00a0 significant decrease would negatively impact the Company\u2019s operations and finances, it\u00a0 was important to take some meaningful action to help customers\u201d.<\/p>\n

The rate reduction has lessened the severe impact of high electricity prices, which have\u00a0 been climbing since January 2021 because of increases in world fuel prices. Fuel\u00a0 charge to customers is currently at a record high 87 cents per kWh.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation for the Company as well as customers,\u00a0 Hosten says the timing of the discontinuation of the 25% reduction cannot be further\u00a0 delayed. \u201cHaving given up 25% of its non-fuel revenue for 8-months, Grenlec can no\u00a0 longer sustain this decrease without severe consequences to its ability to maintain\u00a0 service standards\u201d.<\/p>\n

Significantly, the non-fuel rate before the 25% reduction represented a rate that had\u00a0 increased by less than 3 cents in nearly 30 years. With the 25% reduction, the\u00a0 Company was operating with a rate that was lower than it was 28 years ago.<\/p>\n

Notice is hereby given that effective 9 September 2022, the 25% reduced non-fuel rate\u00a0 has been discontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Company will bill usage prior to 9 September 2022 at the reduced temporary rate.<\/p>\n

As the world energy crisis persists, marked by price increases in all sectors, Grenlec is\u00a0 appealing to customers to eliminate wastage and conserve electricity to help manage\u00a0electricity bills.<\/p>\n
