Fellow Grenadians,<\/p>\n
Child Month is traditionally celebrated in many countries of\u00a0 the world, including Grenada, during the month of October,\u00a0 and it provides us with a wonderful opportunity to shine a loving and caring light on children the world over. Children are\u00a0 our nation\u2019s most precious resource and it is only fitting that\u00a0 we dedicate an entire month to once again ensure that this\u00a0 message is conveyed to our children and our nation.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s theme is \u201cChildren\u2019s Care and Education Matter: Let\u00a0 Children Grow, Glow and Flourish.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>For this reason, we must\u00a0 focus on the general good health, care and education of our\u00a0 children.<\/p>\n
Thirty-two years ago, in 1990, Grenada signed the Convention\u00a0 on the Rights of the Child, which calls on society to do its<\/p>\n
utmost to promote the general welfare of the child. The\u00a0 government of Grenada, with the support of non governmental organisations, have passed legislation and\u00a0 developed policies and programmes aimed at improving the\u00a0 safety, security and standard of living of children.<\/p>\n
General Good Health\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
According to national statistics, the health status of Grenada\u2019s children has been steadily improving over the past twenty\u00a0 years. This includes a steady decline in the mortality of\u00a0 children under five from 22 per thousand in 1990 to 16 per\u00a0 thousand in 2020. Nutritional standards have improved and<\/p>\n
the overwhelming majority of children under five receive all\u00a0 the recommended childhood vaccinations. The recent change\u00a0 in the daily school feeding programme to include bananas, a\u00a0 locally-grown fruit, is an encouraging start to promoting\u00a0 healthy eating habits of our children.<\/p>\n
The Care We Give Our Children\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
The care we provide to our children compares favourably with\u00a0 other countries, although we still have room for improvement.\u00a0 Indicators suggest that our country is a leader in prenatal and\u00a0 early childhood care. Indeed, child mortality has been\u00a0 decreasing in Grenada over the decades.<\/p>\n
Here in Grenada, medical personnel, parents and\u00a0 grandparents, especially women, shower an abundance of\u00a0 love and affection on our young ones. Yet, we can do more to<\/p>\n
stem violence in the home and society against boys and girls\u00a0 and to ensure counselling and other services for our children\u2019s\u00a0 mental health and overall well-being. Let us remember that\u00a0 children\u2019s good health provides the foundation to ensure that\u00a0 they become our nation builders and leaders of tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Children\u2019s Quality Education\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
If Grenada\u2019s transformation agenda is to be successful, quality\u00a0 education for all children is of paramount importance and\u00a0 must become a reality. Under Government\u2019s transformation\u00a0 agenda, significant progress is being made in this regard. Indeed, a good education is a basic human right which helps\u00a0 to build character and confidence and teach children decision\u00a0making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These are\u00a0 all life skills that children need during their childhood and,\u00a0 more importantly, during their entire adult lives. For this\u00a0 reason, we must focus on the acquisition of these skills at an\u00a0 early stage in children\u2019s lives. It is an indisputable fact that\u00a0 quality education that is accessible to all reduces overall\u00a0 poverty and provides a solid foundation for Grenada to\u00a0 produce leaders who can confidently take their place\u00a0 anywhere in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n
In an era of innovation and expanding opportunities, including\u00a0 digitalisation and rapidly developing technological\u00a0 applications, strong social connections and expanded career\u00a0 opportunities, let us renew and strengthen our commitment\u00a0 to the care, health, safety and full education of Grenada\u2019s\u00a0 greatest and most valuable human resource \u2013 our children.<\/p>\n
Fellow Grenadians,\u00a0With tremendous pride in our nation\u2019s children, and\u00a0 appreciation for all who love and care for them, it gives me\u00a0 great pleasure to declare open the October 2022 Child Month\u00a0 in Grenada.<\/p>\n
