Dickon Mitchell outlined the Government\u2019s\u00a0 plans for the Marketing and National Importing Board (MNIB), following a series of public\u00a0 consultations on the way forward for the cash-strapped entity.<\/p>\n<p>Taking into consideration all stakeholder recommendations, the Government of Grenada\u00a0 took the bold but necessary decision to restart the MNIB as a Public-Private Partnership\u00a0 within a six (6) month period.<\/p>\n<p>Effective February 28, 2023, the dissolution and reform of the current MNIB will include\u00a0 the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The payment of staff salaries for January 2023 in the sum of $155,000 and the\u00a0 termination and severance payment of ninety-four (94) members of staff estimated\u00a0 at $2.5 million.<\/li>\n<li>The cessation of existing contracts, as far as possible, to significantly reduce third party liabilities (leases, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>The Government\u2019s assumption of all liabilities (both secured and unsecured) with\u00a0 a view to renegotiate the repayment of debts.<\/li>\n<li>The transfer of all MNIB assets to the Central Government.<\/li>\n<li>A Letter of Expectations as it pertains to the functioning of the current Board of\u00a0 Directors.<\/li>\n<li>Specific directives to the Ministry of Finance regarding the MNIB.\u00a0\u2022\u00a0The establishment of a Technical Working Group (TWG) to treat with the\u00a0 establishment of an appropriate Public-Private Partnership to support the\u00a0 agricultural sector\u2019s transformation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The TWG will be composed as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chair<\/li>\n<li>Member \u2013 Representative for the Farmers<\/li>\n<li>Member \u2013 Representative for the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Member \u2013 Representative for the Ministry of Agriculture<\/li>\n<li>Member \u2013 Representative for Legal Affairs<\/li>\n<li>Member \u2013 Representative for Carriacou &amp; Petite Martinique<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the short term, to facilitate the winding down of current operations and to ensure the\u00a0 continuance of core services, a Transition Team will be hired under new terms. The Team,\u00a0 with guidance from the Board of Directors, will be responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exiting existing contracts and the closing of retail outlets, as far as possible.\u00a0\u2022\u00a0The sale of existing inventory and excess equipment and materials.\u00a0\u2022\u00a0The continuation of the monopoly arrangements for sugar and other dry goods.\u00a0\u2022\u00a0The reorganisation of the River Road Facility to support existing farmers.\u00a0\u2022\u00a0The verification of all claims and the submission of detailed reports to the Ministry\u00a0 of Finance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Board and Transition Team will continue to provide support to farmers in the sale\u00a0 and marketing of their produce and products, to include the purchasing of fruits and\u00a0 vegetables for sale to secured markets.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister, Hon. Dickon Mitchell said, \u201cthe critical decision was necessary to stop\u00a0 losses and create a viable and sustainable entity for all stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the longer term, the new Public-Private Partnership will be given the mandate to tackle\u00a0 the current gaps in the coordination of food transport, storage, preservation, distribution, and exportation of agricultural produce and products, to better align with the\u00a0 Government\u2019s transformational agenda and the thrust to increase food security.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Grenada will continue to engage in consultations with the Board,\u00a0 Union, creditors, and all stakeholders that are crucially important for the success of this\u00a0 transition process and looks forward to the continued cooperation and participation of all\u00a0 parties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>At a Special Press Briefing held on Monday, February 13, 2023,\u00a0 Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon.
