{"id":11189,"date":"2023-02-16T08:29:23","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T12:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/?p=11189"},"modified":"2023-02-16T08:29:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T12:29:23","slug":"grenada-national-reparations-committee-reparations-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/16\/grenada-national-reparations-committee-reparations-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"Grenada National Reparations Committee \u2013 Reparations Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>St. George\u2019s:<\/strong>\u00a0A Caribbean struggle, which began in the 1830s seeking restitution for the enslavement of people of African descent, will move a step forward and be the focus of a forum on Monday, February 27, in Grenada.<\/p>\n<p>The forum, at the Trade Centre in Morne Rouge, is being organized by the\u00a0Grenada National Reparations Committee (GNRC), which was set up by a cabinet conclusion of March 2021. Its mandate is to advocate for the attainment of reparatory justice.<\/p>\n<p>Among the attendees and speakers at the forum will be vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Hilary Beckles, who is also the chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission; and BBC correspondent Laura Trevelyan and members of her family.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55275\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebarnaclenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Laura-Trevelyan.jpg?resize=210%2C210&amp;ssl=1\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebarnaclenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Laura-Trevelyan.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebarnaclenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Laura-Trevelyan.jpg?resize=360%2C360&amp;ssl=1 360w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebarnaclenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Laura-Trevelyan.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Laura Trevelyan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Trevelyans were plantation owners in Grenada in the\u00a019th Century\u00a0and enslaved more than\u00a01,000 Africans\u00a0on five sugar estates.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Trevelyan, who produced a documentary on Grenada last year \u2013 \u201cGrenada Confronting the Past\u2019\u2019, has apologized for\u00a0her family\u2019s slave-owning past.<\/p>\n<p>She will be joined by\u00a0other family members on this month\u2019s Grenada visit to issue a public apology.<\/p>\n<p>The family will give \u00a3100,000 \u2013 the equivalent of about US$120,000 \u2013 to establish an education fund at the UWI Open Campus Grenada; details of the fund will be determined by the GNRC in collaboration with the Government of Grenada. More information on this issue will be shared at the forum of the 27<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trevelyan family asked how they could make reparations. They were told about the CARICOM ten-point plan and they sought advice from Professor Hilary Beckles,\u2019\u2019 said attorney Arley Gill, GNRC chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-two members of the Trevelyan clan have agreed to sign a letter of apology for the enslavement of Africans in Grenada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me to be giving \u00a3100,000 almost 200 years later, maybe that seems like really inadequate,\u2019\u2019 said Trevelyan, head of the BBC\u2019s New York office. \u201cBut, I hope that we\u2019re setting an example by apologising for what our ancestors did.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Trevelyan said she has been contacted by\u00a0British\u00a0families \u201cin similar positions, descendants of slave owners \u2013 some of them with far more significant holdings than us. They want to talk about how to handle their own past\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In recounting her 2022 Grenada trip,\u00a0Trevelyan\u00a0recalled seeing \u201cthe instruments of torture that were used to restrain\u2019\u2019 the enslaved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really horrific,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cI saw for myself the plantations where slaves were punished. I felt ashamed. You can\u2019t repair the past, but you can acknowledge the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gill\u00a0described the attempt at restitution by the Trevelyans as a \u201cpositive step in the right direction\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago, the governments and peoples and institutions and families in the former colonial powers were not even prepared to give an apology,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>One current Grenada parliamentarian, Peter David, welcomes the apology and the reparations payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apology is critical and is a recognition of the evils of slavery,\u2019\u2019 said David, MP for the Town of St. George.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr Nicole Phillip-Dowe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor there to be an apology, it indicates an understanding that slavery was an economic institution and the impact that slavery and the colonial period have had on the economic wellbeing of our countries, our peoples and on communities of peoples of African descent.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>UWI\u2019s Dr Nicole Phillip-Dowe, who is GNRC vice-chair, said a slavery apology is \u201cnecessary\u2019\u2019 in the ongoing struggle of reparations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exceedingly heartwarming to see the Trevelyan family taking that very bold step, a leap of faith you may call it, to be able to come forward and say what was done in the past was wrong; we acknowledge it was wrong, and we want to apologise on behalf of our family for what has happened in the past,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a student of history and a teacher of history, it\u2019s absolutely amazing to see history in the making; having taught Caribbean history, having taught about enslavement and the horrors of enslavement and the need for reparations, starting first with an acknowledgement that something wrong was done and issuing an apology, are absolutely necessary moving forward. \u2018\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div
