The Office of the Integrity Commission, on Monday facilitated a one-day workshop\u00a0 on Ethics and Integrity with members of the Council and Faculty of the T. A.\u00a0 Marryshow Community College (TAMCC).<\/p>\n
The activity which was held in the Hospitality Arts Building of the College was\u00a0 attended by twenty-seven participants, including Chairperson of the Council Dr.\u00a0 Wendy Grenade, and Principal of the College Dr. Ronald Brunton.<\/p>\n
In her remarks Dr. Grenade thanked the Commission for accepting the Council\u2019s\u00a0 invitation to share knowledge and incite on the topics and to provide guidance to\u00a0 the College as it strives to become a premier institution, not only in Grenada but\u00a0 across the region. She described the information shared as being interesting,\u00a0 important and valuable as the College was on a path to enhancing its impact in the\u00a0 country. Dr. Grenade said she is confident that the information shared would assist\u00a0 the College in the development and implementation of structures geared towards\u00a0 improved outputs.<\/p>\n
The session on Corruption was facilitated by Mrs. Samorna Dowe-Mitchell, Acting\u00a0 Head of Investigations. She looked at the definition of corruption, its impact on\u00a0 society and how individuals can take responsibility for fighting it.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the presentation, Mrs. Dowe-Mitchell said \u201conce there is\u00a0 awareness of what corruption is, and a commitment to fighting against it, then I\u00a0 believe that we\u2019re on the right track.\u201d<\/p>\n
Head of the Operations Department, Mrs. Henry-Greenidge, facilitated the\u00a0 discussion on Ethics and Integrity. She looked at the definition and types of ethics,\u00a0 specifically the utilitarian approach to ethics, which falls under normative ethics.\u00a0 Her presentation also addressed the relationship between ethics and integrity and\u00a0 in closing she challenged the participants to be ethical and walk in integrity.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the Presentation, Mrs. Henry-Greenidge said \u201cthese are topics that\u00a0 generate much discussion, because our actions are a manifestation of our ethics or\u00a0 lack thereof; while our integrity comes from a greater depth of character. We\u00a0 should all strive to be persons of integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest was facilitated by the Commission\u2019s Legal\u00a0 and Compliance Officer, Mr. Akeyno Bartholomew. In addition to looking at conflict\u00a0 of interest, in the Code of Conduct, he referenced the guidelines of the\u00a0 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).<\/p>\n
He mentioned cultural shifts that would have to take place to meet international\u00a0 obligations requiring the adoption of best practices.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bartholomew discussed the differences between apparent, potential and real\u00a0 conflicts of interest and the importance of managing conflicts of interest in areas\u00a0 where they cannot be avoided.<\/p>\n
\u201cManaging conflict of interest is as equally important as avoiding it; and in small\u00a0 societies as ours, susceptible to conflicts of interest, identifying such conflicts and\u00a0 managing them are pivotal to anti-corruption efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Discussion throughout the day on each topic was robust with some participants\u00a0 acknowledging that the material shared, shed new light on issues they thought they\u00a0 knew.<\/p>\n
The College administrators also expressed interest in the development of a Code of\u00a0 Ethics specific to the college in the near future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
