A clean up exercise at Levera St Patrick on Tuesday, was the hallmark of activities marking the observance of International Day of the forest which is celebrated annually on March 21st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

The joint exercise included officials from the Ministry of Agriculture & Lands, Fisheries and Cooperatives, and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

The United Nations General Assembly\u00a0declared<\/a> March 21st<\/sup> as the International Day of Forests in 2012, \u00a0to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.<\/p>\n

Countries are also encouraged to undertake efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.<\/p>\n

Chief Forestry Officer Anthony Jeremiah was among stakeholders at Tuesdays Clean up exercise. \u201cThe forest itself provides many health benefits, we understand how the forest benefit us as humans- as we use it for our recreation; so we need to create healthy forests that will create a healthy nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the 2023 theme- \u201cForests and their Health,\u201d- the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands Fisheries and Cooperatives partnered with the St.Patrick\u2019s Environmental and Community Tourism Organisation (SPECTO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the T. A Marryshow Community College (St.Patrick Campus) in staging the\u00a0 clean-up exercise at Levera.<\/p>\n

SPECTO Representative Flarisha Mitchell praised the response from the young persons who participated in the exercise. \u201cWe are applauding all young people that participated in the exercise and those who continue to play their part in keeping Grenada clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most of the garbage collected included items made from plastic.<\/p>\n

Aiden Forteau Sustainable Landscape Management Specialist for the Climate Resilient and Agriculture Project outlines the importance of Tuesdays activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that forests are importance for the socio economic development of our country, however awareness alone is not enough- based on what was collected, if these platics were to be ingested by the turtles who nest here, we understand what they can do to their population, hence we must do more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initiative sought to raise awareness on forests; their sustainable management and their use as key resources in combating climate change, and to contributing to the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations.<\/p>\n

Healthy according to the United Nations forests are vital for all aspects of a healthy planet, from livelihoods and nutrition to biodiversity and the environment.<\/p>\n

Upcoming Training Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Climate Smart Agriculture & Rural Enterprise Program (SAEP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands and CARDI is offering relevant training for farmers on Nursery Management at the CARDI Field Station Wednesday March 29, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.<\/p>\n

The training is targeted towards SAEP beneficiaries involved in Nursery Production and other farmers (non-beneficiaries) also interested in nursery production.<\/p>\n
