The Government of Grenada celebrated a significant milestone in its\u00a0 ongoing efforts to create more equitable and supportive work environments, signing a\u00a0 collective agreement with the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) on salary increases\u00a0 and fringe benefits to the tune of 13% for the period 2023-2025.<\/p>\n
Negotiations between the Government and the GUT began on January 17, 2023, and\u00a0 concluded on March 27, 2023, making the GUT the first of the bargaining units to sign\u00a0 with Government for this negotiating period.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Dickon Mitchell, underscored the\u00a0 significance of the agreement for the nation\u2019s teachers, who play a critical role in laying\u00a0 the foundation for the country\u2019s growth and development.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Signing Ceremony, the Prime Minister thanked all teachers for their\u00a0 dedication and sacrifice and acknowledged the GUT for showing leadership within the\u00a0 industrial sector, encouraging other unions to follow their example.<\/p>\n
Permanent Secretary (Ag) with responsibility for Public Administration and Deputy Chair\u00a0 of the Government Negotiating Team (GNT), Mrs. Lyndonna Hillaire Marshall,\u00a0 expressed heartfelt appreciation to all parties for the spirit of the negotiations, which she\u00a0 described as extremely cordial despite frank discussions.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Mr. Jude Bartholomew, President General of the GUT, said the\u00a0 negotiations were historic, noting that unions often had to resort to marching in the\u00a0 streets, and seeking mediation through the Labour Commissioner, among other\u00a0 challenges, to secure salary increases for workers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are at a very good place at this time, where the Government of Grenada would\u00a0 have paid pensions, the docked salaries to teachers, the 23% for the T. A. Marryshow\u00a0 Community College (TAMCC), which had not been paid for a long period of time, and\u00a0 recognising the many different things that the government is doing for workers,\u201d he\u00a0 shared.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bartholomew also called on members of the GUT to step up productivity levels,\u00a0 considering the Government\u2019s efforts, noting the responsibility of teachers to develop\u00a0 the nation\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n
The public is reminded that in 2020, the Prison Welfare Association, the Royal Grenada\u00a0 Police Force, and the Grenada Manual, Maritime and Intellectual Workers\u2019 Union signed\u00a0 to receive 4% salary increase for the year 2023.<\/p>\n
