Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture Hon. Ron Redhead has expressed sadness on the passing of Coach Harvey Glance, whom Grenadians fondly remember for his\u00a0 contribution to the performance of Olympic gold medal winner Kirani James, on the\u00a0 world athletics stage.<\/p>\n
Glance, a\u00a0three-time U.S. Olympian and 1976 Olympic gold medal winner, died on\u00a0\u00a0Monday at the age of sixty-six after suffering a cardiac arrest recently.<\/p>\n
Glance\u2019s coaching guided Kirani James to winning Grenada\u2019s first gold medal at the\u00a0 Olympic Games in London in 2012 and a silver and bronze medal thereafter.<\/p>\n
He first worked as an assistant coach at Auburn University (1990\u201391) and then\u00a0became Head Coach.<\/p>\n
In 1997, Glance became the track and field head coach at the University of\u00a0Alabama. While there, he established the \u2018Crimson Tide\u2019 as one of the best college\u00a0teams in the United States, and was able to attract top athletes to the university\u00a0including James.<\/p>\n
Minister Redhead said, \u201cI extend heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and\u00a0friends of Mr. Harvey Glance, one of our top-ranked athletic coaches, whose untimely\u00a0passing has truly shocked the entire sporting fraternity. Mr. Glance displayed the\u00a0highest level of sportsmanship in coaching athletic greats such as our Olympic\u00a0Champion Kirani James and many other athletes across the globe\u201d.<\/p>\n
