On October 20, 2023, we celebrate the\u00a0International Day of the Air Traffic\u00a0Controller (ATC). This profession plays a\u00a0critical role in aviation safety. They\u00a0monitor, coordinate, and direct the\u00a0movement of aircraft within the airspace\u00a0and on the ground to ensure safety and\u00a0maintain safe distances between aircraft\u00a0to prevent collision.<\/p>\n
In Grenada, Air Traffic Controllers direct\u00a0\u00a0aircraft movement within our airspace,\u00a0which extends from the surface up to\u00a013,500 feet, covering an area of 38\u00a0nautical miles to the north, 30 nautical miles to the west and south, and 81 nautical\u00a0 miles to the east.<\/p>\n
Air Traffic Controllers are guided by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)\u00a0 standards. Therefore, regardless of where they are going or coming from, pilots and Air\u00a0 Traffic Controllers worldwide communicate using the same language.<\/p>\n
The Grenada Airports Authority (GAA) has a complement of dedicated Air Traffic\u00a0 Controllers providing reliable services at our airport facilities. Globally, it is predicted that\u00a0 an average of 2,000 newly trained ATCs per year will be required to keep the smooth\u00a0 flow of Air Traffic Control until 2032. In coordination with the Ministry of Civil Aviation,\u00a0 the GAA will launch a recruitment drive to attract young local talents to join this\u00a0 important aviation field.<\/p>\n
Today, on the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller, the Grenada Airports\u00a0 Authority and the Grenada Air Traffic Controllers Association (GATCA) would like to\u00a0 raise awareness and express appreciation for the hardworking men and women who\u00a0 work behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our skies and air travel.<\/p>\n
