(PAHO) \u2013\u00a0<\/b>Health managers from across the\u00a0 Caribbean gathered for a two-day conference in Grenada on November 9th\u00a0and 10th, 2023, to\u00a0 examine how health promotion can continue to improve the health of Caribbean people.<\/p>\n
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) event entitled \u2018Strengthening Health\u00a0 Promotion: Three Decades after the Caribbean Charter\u2019, recognized the 30th\u00a0anniversary of\u00a0 the establishment of the Caribbean Charter for Health Promotion during the first Caribbean Conference of Health Promotion held in 1993.<\/p>\n
Among the objectives of the conference was to review the current status of Health Promotion\u00a0 in the region; to identify the key strengths and the pending challenges the Caribbean\u00a0 countries face, 30 years later, in order to advance in Health Promotion; to reinforce the\u00a0 importance of integrating Health Promotion as a key priority in the political and technical\u00a0 agendas; and to identify opportunities for action to define a roadmap to advance Health Promotion in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
In welcoming participants to the conference, PAHO\/WHO Representative for Barbados and\u00a0 the Eastern Caribbean Countries (ECC), Dr. Amalia Del Riego, thanked the Ministry of Health,\u00a0 Wellness and Religious Affairs in Grenada for their support.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis meeting is to celebrate our achievements, look at the unfinished agenda and more\u00a0 importantly to move forward in the development of innovative approaches. So PAHO\/WHO\u00a0 will continue to be an important partner with you in this journey.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Del Riego outlined the complexity of the health landscape in the region, highlighting the\u00a0 burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) driven largely by the high rates of\u00a0 hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, the burden of infectious diseases such\u00a0as vector-borne illnesses, pandemics, the prevalence of mental health issues which are on the\u00a0 rise and the challenges being caused by climate change.<\/p>\n
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in widespread loss of life and astronomical costs in all\u00a0 nations. However, there were lessons learned and The Minister of Health, Wellness and\u00a0 Religious Affairs, Senator, The Honourable Jonathan LaCrette, reflected that the COVID-19\u00a0 pandemic presented an opportunity for countries to prioritise health.<\/p>\n
Minister LaCrette described COVID-19 as \u201callowing us the opportunity to put pen to paper\u00a0 and take out the health file from under the pile where it was and put it on top from an\u00a0 international perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Minister stated that \u201call across the globe, health is being championed,\u201d and expressed\u00a0 pleasure since \u201cthe only way our economies are going to be sustained is if we have healthy\u00a0 and productive citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cSo we have converged on Grenadian soil this morning so that we will be able to\u00a0 build the necessary strategies and though they might be contextual when you return to your\u00a0 respective countries, from a regional perspective we can speak with one regional voice as it\u00a0 relates to what health promotion must look like in our various countries.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Gerry Eijkemans, PAHO\/WHO Director of the Department of Social and Environmental\u00a0 Determinants for Health Equity, reiterated \u201cthat health promotion is an invaluable tool, as\u00a0 keeping our people healthy is the most important thing we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Commenting on other considerations affecting health, she added: \u201cWe all know that even if\u00a0 we want to live healthy and we want to exercise, or if we want to eat healthy food, if it is too\u00a0 expensive, or if the environment is not safe enough, or if we don\u2019t have time because we\u00a0 need to work several jobs and take care of children, the lifestyle follows the environment and\u00a0 policies that we set.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Strengthening Health Promotion: Three Decades after the Caribbean Charter\u2019 was attended\u00a0 by Ministers of Health, permanent secretaries, Chief Medical Officers, health promotion\u00a0 officers and PAHO officials from the Office of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries\u00a0 (ECC), Washington DC, Belize and Suriname.<\/p>\n
Approximately 40 participants attended the conference, representing Anguilla, Barbados,\u00a0 Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Suriname, St. Kitts and Nevis, St.\u00a0 Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Turks and Caicos Islands, Suriname, Trinidad and\u00a0 Tobago, and Washington DC.<\/p>\n
