Grenadians received critical eye care\u00a0\u00a0services recently through the St. George\u2019s University (SGU)\u00a0Physician\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Humanitarian Network (PHuN) ophthalmology clinic<\/b>\u2014the first specialized\u00a0\u00a0eye clinic since before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Former SGU student Dr. Bernard Spier headed the ophthalmology clinic in\u00a0\u00a0Grenada, along with two ophthalmologists, Dr. Elliot Crane and Dr. Zachary\u00a0\u00a0Mendelson, and two assistants, Ms. Karen Rodriguez and Ms. Carrie Rivera.\u00a0\u00a0The clinic took place from February 19 to March 1, 2024.<\/p>\n
The team completed 139 examinations and consultations for those suffering\u00a0\u00a0from eye-related ailments such as cataracts and glaucoma. Additionally, the\u00a0\u00a0team did more than 40 procedures including small-incision cataract\u00a0\u00a0surgeries, corneal transplants, YAG laser procedures, and Avastin injections\u00a0\u00a0that restored and improved sight for many Grenadians. The team completed\u00a0\u00a0these procedures with $117,656 USD worth of donated medical supplies,\u00a0\u00a0surgical equipment, corneal tissue, and more, organized by Dr. Spier.<\/p>\n
Dr. Spier, an ophthalmologist with a practice in South Orange, NJ,\u00a0\u00a0participated in his first PHuN ophthalmology clinic in 2006. This past trip\u00a0\u00a0marks his 13th trip to Grenada to serve the local community through PHuN.\u00a0\u00a0According to Dr. Spier, he chose to donate his time and skills to the\u00a0\u00a0Grenadian people because it is \u201ca basic act of human kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, it\u2019s the idea of improving a person\u2019s life with these procedures,\u201d Dr.\u00a0\u00a0Spier said. \u201cSimply, it feels good to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The SGU PHuN Program has a history of making an impact on the lives of\u00a0\u00a0Grenadians in other specialties such as\u00a0cardiology<\/b>,\u00a0v<\/b>ascular surgery<\/b>,\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0obstetrics\/gynecology<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe SGU PHuN program is extremely beneficial to the Grenadian\u00a0\u00a0community because it provides valuable support in the form of medical<\/p>\n
services to the people of the island as well as donations of medical supplies to\u00a0\u00a0the ophthalmology clinic,\u201d said Dr. Brendon La Grenade, vice provost of St.\u00a0\u00a0George\u2019s University. \u201cIt also provides an outlet for a variety of SGU doctors of\u00a0\u00a0various disciplines to give back to the island where they got both their\u00a0\u00a0education and medical career starts.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Dr. Spier, the chance to give back to the people of Grenada is deeply\u00a0\u00a0meaningful.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a special place in my heart for Grenada because that\u2019s where I got my\u00a0\u00a0start in medicine,\u201d said Dr. Spier. \u201cGrenada gave me an opportunity to\u00a0\u00a0become a doctor. If I hadn\u2019t gone to Grenada, I would\u2019ve done something else\u00a0\u00a0[besides medicine].\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Spier encourages other former students and alumni of SGU to consider\u00a0\u00a0participating in the SGU PHuN program, naming it as a profoundly rewarding\u00a0\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n
