Grenadians have the option as a last resort to relocate to a emergency shelter if they feel unsafe in their home during a storm or hurricane.<\/p>\n
The National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) on Monday announced the 105 designated emergency\u00a0shelters from June 2024 to May 2025 across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.<\/p>\n
National Disaster Coordinator, Dr Terrence Walters, warns that hurricane experts have predicted that this year\u2019s season will be hyperactive, which is way above-average.<\/p>\n
Grenadians are being urged to prepare for the season and ensure they know\u00a0the location of their closest emergency shelter.<\/p>\n
NaDMA Shelter Management Commitee member, Tonya Hyacinth, says persons who must use the shelters should bring\u00a0 the following personal items that apply to them and their family:<\/p>\n
Sleeping equipment, blankets, sheets, pillows, cots or sleeping bags<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Food and water to last for the first 72 hours for the entire family<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Flashlights, batteries, radios, power banks for cell phones<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
First aid kits<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Books, games to keep children occupied<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Special medication, general medication, asthma pumps<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Special food or dietary requirements<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Hearing aids and walking sticks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Baby diapers and formula<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
She noted the emergency shelter has rules which must be followed. Weapons and illegal drugs are prohibited and will be confiscated, and the Royal Grenada Police Force called in.<\/p>\n
Open flames for cooking are not allowed in shelters. Pets are not allowed in shelters due to environmental health laws, with Grenadians reminded to find alternative locations for pets.<\/p>\n
The shelter team is also prohibited from accepting responsibility for personal items people bring to the shelter.<\/p>\n
